Big Mama is Salsa's four inch travel, 29er trail bike designed for epic rides. Made of custom-drawn scandium tubing, the Big Mama uses a single pivot, flexing seatstay design to activate a custom- tuned Fox RP2 air shock. The seatstays act as an integral part of the suspension design.

When properly sagged, the tuned seatstays provide resistance to pedal-induced bobbing while still remaining sensitive to small bump forces. On larger hits, the flexing seatstays work with the linkage to assist the rear shock in moving through its full stroke. Use of the flexing seatstays eliminates the need for a rearward pivot. This increases stiffness in the rear triangle and lessens stress on the frame’s remaining pivots and bearings increasing durability.

Salsa put a lot of effort into the details of this frame. Maximizing lateral stiffness, seven forged parts to add strength, plenty of standover clearance, size specific cable routing, and clearance for big tires are just a few of the details. The direct mount, post style disc brake mount offers adaptor-free caliper mounting with 160mm rotors.
